What is Hunting?

Hunting is the act of killing wildlife for food, sport, and man made materials. The practice of hunting especially as a means of providing food and clothing has been dated back to the earliest of times with fossil evidence supporting this. During these early times, hunting provided food and clothing for the people. The Native Americans used the hide of animals to make their shelters. The animals that the Native Americans killed were used as a main food source, clothing, shoes, tools, and shelter; nothing was wasted. Often their survival depended on what they brought back from their hunt.

Hunting is a necessary means of survival in areas that are not suitable for agricultural use. The native people in the Arctic are a good example of this. On the other side of the globe is Africa, where professional trophy hunters have enjoyed hunting as a big game trophy sport.

Each state has laws regulating hunting in that state requiring a hunting license, and often restrictions apply to the game hunted. Such restrictions apply to the number of wildlife that can be killed and tagged or bagged depending if it is big game or small game.

There are many hunting methods that have been developed over the years. Many hunters use decoys and scents to attract wildlife, or a stand that is concealed where they are able to watch and listen for signs of wildlife. In some areas, hunters use trapping devices to catch their prey. Whatever means they use, hunting has turned into a big business and a means of controlling the animal population.
