Wikipedia defines hunting as "The practice of pursuing live animals for food, recreation or trade". Cavemen hunted for food and clothing.
Hunting today is a lawful activity, as opposed to poaching, and every state has open and closed seasons on most animals. Some states have no open season on some animals that have very low numbers. For many years, there was no open season on buffalo, because hunting was banned in Montana in 1991. There were only 23 buffalo surviving in Yellowstone National Park at the beginning of the last century, but those numbers have swelled to 4,900, and hunting has been restored.
Many states in the US have hunting ranches where either exotic or native animals are raised or shipped in for the pleasure of bagging big game. Some hunters have a special animal they like to hunt. Deer hunting is popular because they are very readily available in every state. Most states have seasons that allow hunting with several types of firearms, such as shotguns, hand guns, and riflesm as well as primitive firearms like muzzleloaders, crossbows, and archery.
There's a hunting season for small game, like rabbits, squirrel, groundhogs, fox, coyote, raccoon, and many others. Some of the small game can be trapped, and there is a trapping season for those. Kansas has a fur bearer season for hunting and trapping badger, bobcat, mink, raccoon, opossum, and three species fox, as well as skunk and weasel. There is a running season, but no animals can be taken during this season, and it is illegal to carry a firearm or anything to trap a fur bearer during the running season.
