Hunting Basics

Hunting is an activity enjoyed by outdoors enthusiasts everywhere. Whether it is for recreation, stocking up the freezer, or trade, there is nothing like the open wilderness and the thrill of a kill for the avid huntsman. Hunting encompasses many uses. From maintaining healthy wildlife populations, to eliminating vermin, hunting can serve a vital purpose. The history of hunting dates back to the beginning of time, and even then, there were certain basics to follow.

The first and foremost rule to be understood when hunting is when and where it is legal to do so. Certain animals can be hunted at certain times of the year, and licenses must be purchased. Often, hunters are restricted to how many of a certain animals they are permitted to kill. Hunting illegally is called poaching, and is punishable by law, so it is important that hunters pay attention. Also, some land is private, and hunting on it is trespassing, so permission needs to be granted, or the area avoided.

Whether you are hunting white tail deer, pheasant, or any prey, it is important to prepare in advance. The right equipment can be the difference between a successful hunt or coming home empty handed. Safety is your first focus, so maintaining and cleaning rifles and bows is essential to prevent accidents. It is always good to avoid cheap shells and target loads. Also, be sure you don't smell strongly of food, coffee, or cigarettes. Animals have a keen sense of smell and you don't want to tip them off. Keep something reflective on your body to be sure other hunters know you are there. Finally, know your prey. Understand daily movements, and breeding habits. Happy Hunting!
