Quail Hunting Tips

Quail hunting is known as a gentleman's sport probably because a hunter is not required to sit in blinds and shiver, nor to rise before dawn. Normally, quail hunting involves a couple of bird dogs and a pair of hunters to cover a field properly.

Begin preparing for a hunt with pants called briar-faced or brush pants. These save hunters from briars and thorns that penetrate the legs. Next, a good pair of boots, usually short leather boots are needed. A good front load hunting shirt is essential. Also, a vest or coat is needed to carry shells and game. Most states require a blaze orange vest or coat as this type of hunting requires hunters to be very visible because they are usually close to each other.

The most important item to acquire is a good shotgun. They range from a 410 to 12 gauge guns. Experts suggest a shorter barrel and more open chokes are preferred for quail hunting. The 12 gauge appears to be the most common choice. A 28 gauge is becoming more popular with quail hunters.

Hunting guides instruct hunters on the proper way to carry their guns and use the safety locks. Most guides like to help hunters know the swing range to stay within when firing at game. Safety measures are first and foremost in the sport of quail hunting.

Many people learn that some of the best quail hunting can be close to the end of the season. Quail readily change their habits when the hunting season starts, therefore your hunting skills need to be slightly changed also.

Learn from seasoned hunters. In the field, experience is the best way to learn. Know the birds habits and that they change with the weather.
