Wolf Hunting in North America

Hunting for wolves is not for the faint of heart or the impatient. By nature wolves, are wily and cautious. The wolf is nocturnal and hunts in packs, so current laws on the books making it illegal to hunt at night make it even more difficult. If you enjoy the hunt and not just the kill, then hunting for wolves in America could be the sport for you.

There are only a few states where wolf hunting is legal. In 2008, Idaho drafted rules allowed a wolf hunting season from September 15th to December 31st. The number of wolves allowed to be hunted and killed depends on the wolf population in each region, and the number of wolves that were killed for killing livestock. In Montana, no licenses will be issued for the 2009 wolf hunting season until officials are confident one can occur after the dust has settled regarding the delisting of wolves from the endangered species list. Wolf hunting is heavily regulated in the states of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho.

Alaska allows wolf hunting from December through April, and you can find a number of hunting guides available for hire. Wolf hunting is not heavily regulated in Alaska, making it possible, with the right licenses, to go on wolf hunting trips led by experienced guides. Guides will coach tourists on proper baiting, calling and provide the tour with the right signals and methods for a successful wolf hunt.
