Visiting Large Hunting Parks

The United States is home to many large hunting parks designed to provide hunters with an expanse of land upon which they can take game. These hunting parks are usually portions of broader state park systems. Every hunting park has a unique set of rules and regulations that hunters should be prepared to learn. You can find these regulations at the park's office or at the Department of Wildlife for that particular state.

A particularly popular hunting park in New York is the Adirondack State Park, which encompasses over 6.1 million acres of pristine outdoor areas. Firearms and bows can be used for hunting here, provided you have applied for and received a special hunting permit. You will also need to check on exactly what type of firearms the park permits hunters to use.

In Pennsylvania, one of the largest state parks is Blue Knob, which is 6,128 miles long and holds over 5,000 acres devoted exclusively to hunting. As in New York, Blue Knob requires a special permit to hunt. Also be sure to keep in mind that hunters are not permitted to hunt woodchucks, which are better known as groundhogs. Blue Knob has its own set of regulations concerning the types of firearms which can be used, and these may be different from other parks.

Another hunting park in Pennsylvania is Prince Gallitzin State Park, which has 5,900 acres open for hunting throughout the year. The most common game animal hunted in this park is deer, followed by various small game such as rabbits or birds. Prince Gallitzin State Park does not allow hunters to load their firearms or bows outside of the hunting areas. All hunters are also responsible for picking up any arrows or spent shells, as well as anything else they bring into the park.

The important thing remember when hunting in state parks is to always be as safe as possible and to be aware of other hunters in the area. Hunters must also remember to learn the rules of any hunting park and obey them diligently.
