Arizona hunting is especially good in the Ponderosa Pines area of the state. Arizona has turkey hunting dates in the spring and in the fall. However, you can only bag one turkey per year, so if you shoot one in the spring you cannot go out and shoot another in the fall. The types of turkeys that are hunted in Arizona are the Merriam and the Gould. Arizona is the only state that still allows you to hunt the Gould turkeys. The Merriams are less afraid than the normal Eastern birds but are also more vocal. They respond well to owl hoots and coyote howls.
During mid-September through October you can hunt for elk in Arizona. A male elk weighs in the neighborhood of 700 pounds. They also have a very strong rib cage so be sure you have the proper gun and ammunition to bring one of them down. What makes elk hunting fun is that the elk are very illusive and this creates some interesting aspects for the hunt.
The Arizona Fish and Game Department has set forth a number of hunts just for children. They are hoping to teach the children the need to hunt to keep wild life numbers in check and avoid over population. They sponsor a fall Javelina, turkey and crane hunts for children ages 10 to 17. All in all, Arizona is a fun state to hunt in.
