Hunting Seasons

There is no doubt about it, when hunting season hits, avid huntsmen everywhere begin chomping at the bit to hit the woods. The excitement of the hunt, the thrill of the kill, and the anticipation of the prize are only a few reasons hunters everywhere gather to the hills in droves. No matter what game is hunted, waiting for the right season is crucial. Hunting anything during the wrong season is poaching, and is not only illegal, but holds severe consequences.

Hunting season varies from state to state depending on many factors. Every state has authority over the season of the wildlife found in its perimeter and boundaries. Some game, such as migratory water foul and birds, require the hunter to have a federal license as well as a state license. Hunting season is generally determined as a time of year that is colder than the body temperature needs of the animal, and varies from climate to climate. Another factor that is important is the season of which the particular animal gives birth.

Time of year determined is affected by parasites and bacteria, as well. States generally choose times when these organisms are less problematic; generally in the colder seasons. Most states stick closely to each other regarding the same time of year for much of the game hunted, such as deer, elk, and bear. Chronological order is similar depending on type of game and type of year. Although times of year may slightly differ, the order and pattern are usually the same. Always check with your local fish and wildlife agency before venturing out on your big hunt.
