Hunting Seasons

Hunting has been a part of our lives since time began. In generations past, hunting was necessary for sustenance. Today, hunting is mostly practiced for sport. Since it is no longer a necessity, we can enjoy the skill it takes to catch our prey.

Today, we have many laws and regulations to protect the animals so we do not over-hunt them. Hunting is about controlling the population of animals so they can live in their habitat free of disease, have plenty of food, and have plenty of room to raise their young without causing harm to the human population they live next to.

Each state has its own set of rules. Some require you to take a class before you can go hunting. They want you to be skilled with handling a gun, snowmobile, and/or 4-wheeler. Some states require you to take classes that will teach you how to hunt or even set traps.

When hunting, fishing, or trapping, you must learn when the seasons are for each type of animal you are seeking, such as black bear. In Michigan, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) determines how many bears can be taken. They have set up a quota system in each of their 10 bear management units. They determine just how many bears each unit can handle by the food sources that are available, and if they will bother humans. If too many bears are in one area, then there are food shortages, and they tend to wander into farms and towns looking for food.
