Firearms used for hunting fall in three general categories. There are rifles, shotguns, and handguns. A hunter will choose the proper firearm for the type of game they are hunting. It can be compared to golf, where you would not play the entire course with one club.
Shotguns that fire pellets that spread in flight are used to hunt small, fast moving targets. Most hunters use a shotgun for hunting birds and small game. The most popular shotgun for hunting is the 12 gauge. Other popular models are the 16 gauge, 20 gauge and .410. The bird shot in the cartridges will be rated three through nine. The three will be used for larger birds with its larger pellets and nine for smaller birds, because it has more pellets and will travel farther. A shotgun shell will travel only a few hundred yards.
Hunters will choose a rifle for hunting larger game. The Remington Model 700 series is one of the most popular rifles today. They can be used for hunting big game such as moose or bear. A smaller .22 rifle would more likely be used for hunting fox or groundhog size animals. A rifle shot will travel much farther than a shotgun.
Handguns can be used for any animal, small or large. The .22 pistol is the most popular pistol sold in the U.S. Hunting with a handgun requires expert marksmanship for successful hunting. Their lighter weight makes them an ideal firearm for rough terrain and thick brush. In extremely difficult climbing or cutting through brush, a rifle or shotgun may be nearly impossible to maneuver when both hands are needed to manage the landscape.
