Bow and Arrow Hunting

The correct preparation and maintenance of your equipment will help you have a positive hunting experience. Take care of the bow string routinely; apply wax regularly. Be sure to replace the string and the cables regularly for the smoothest working bow. Modern string materials often do not fray as older materials did, and you may not see signs of wear until there is a break.

Tune your bow to get the right flight for the arrow you will be using. Fletching contact will have quite an impact on arrow flight, so pay particular attention to this often overlooked point.

Whitetail deer will crouch before they spring, take this into account or your arrow may zip right over the back. You may be able to wait and release your shot as the deer takes a step. The distribution of the animal’s weight will make it impossible for a crouch and spring, which gives you a better chance of a clear hit. If you are hunting in a tree stand, try attaching branches of local brush to the lower part of your stand to hide it. Sap from the cut branches and bruised leaves will give off an odor that can help mask your scent.

Besides noise, scent is the most difficult thing to overcome when you are on a hunt. Always wash with unscented soap, including your clothes, before going out. Be aware of all the ways you pick up unnatural scents on your way to the woods. Putting gas in the truck, the foods you have eaten, or other smells that you may have picked up on your clothes are all things to consider. Remember that noise can be as subtle as the rustling of your clothes as you make even the slightest movement.
