Varmint hunting is normally considered pest control. Varmints are usually ground-burrowing animals such as rabbits or groundhogs. Hunting these animals is generally for sport, but eating them is a way of life for many.
When deciding to go varmint hunting the right equipment is essential. Normally a good long rifle of small caliber is the best. As one gets older they may find that their 410 shotguns will do just as good as a rifle, so they can move more slowly. Make sure to go for the headshot so you are not picking buckshot out of your meat.
Hunting rabbit may be the best time many people have had hunting. The hunter can either sit on his butt and wait for a rabbit to come by, or take a walk through the country and scare one up and take the shot. Winter hunting for rabbit may be the easiest. Follow the tracks to a hole and wait for him to come out.
Squirrels are a little trickier to get. Sitting in a wooded area looking up all day will put a creek in your neck but well worth it. Waiting for a squirrel to come by may take hours. Many hunters like to use a squirrel call to draw in their prey.
When it comes to varmint hunting, it's a waiting game like most hunts are. Always try for the head shot for the reason you never eat the head. Some states have seasons when you can hunt varmints, while in other states you can hunt them year round.
