We can all remember as little kids how we would run around with our plastic bow and arrows trying to shoot anything that got in our way, but now you are a little older and want to try out the real thing. The only problem is you don’t know where to start because of all of the different options in bows and arrows. The saying that “you get what you pay for” rings very true in buying a bow and also when buying arrows. You don’t want to miss a big buck because you draw back your bow and your string breaks.
Beginners should stick with a draw weight of about 15-20 pounds. The more experience with a bow a person has the heavier the draw weight should be. Typically you would want your draw weight to be between 45-55 pounds. Another factor is a person’s draw length. The rule is for short draws use a shorter bow and for long draws use a longer bow. Arrows are the last things that need to be purchased because the type of arrow you get is determined on the type of bow you purchase and how much it weighs. Arrows are made out of many different types of materials such as wood, fiber glass, aluminum, carbon, and aluminum carbon. The typical arrow that is used for hunting is made out of carbon.
Safety is very important when hunting. Leave your arrows in the quiver until you have sighted game. Hunting in pairs is always safer in case of an accident or emergency. You should also take a first aid kit and make sure to dress appropriately. Practice makes perfect so practice as much as possible before the season opens.
