Hunting in the Northwest

One of the most hunted game animals in the Northwest United States is elk. Each hunting area provides its own unique challenges. Management of elk populations in recent years has greatly increased the availability of hunting opportunities in the Northwest U.S.

Elk can be found in the higher mountain areas, and graze in meadows in the plains areas. Idaho has some elk hunting areas with steep and rough terrain and timber so thick, it is hard to get in a good shot. The good news is that it is easier to get closer to your target and blend in with the surroundings. The trick to getting close is to watch the wind and never let your scent blow in the wind toward the animal. Once your scent is picked up, it is over and your prey will take off. Calling techniques are very important and can certainly increase your chances of a successful hunt. Take care when you shoot in these dense areas so your shot is not deflected off a tree in its path.

Colorado and Montana offer many private and public elk hunting areas. Modern cabins are interspersed in the foothills where you can find elk grazing outside your window, or take short trips in a four wheel drive vehicle and go to areas where elk historically are located. The high country desert area of Colorado offers easy accessibility for hunters of all ages. The large herds of elk are popular for spot and stalk hunting where the terrain is less challenging than in the high mountain areas.

The Northwest region of the U.S. is a rich habitat for many other big game. You can ride on horseback into the high country of Wyoming and hunt deer, elk, mountain goat, big horn sheep, and bear.
