Commonly Hunted Animals

Animals that are hunted for food or sport are called game. The kind of animal hunted may vary depending on what part of the world you’re in. Climate, local taste and diversity can also influence this. Let’s look at some different animals that are commonly hunted.

The white tail deer is the most hunted animal in North America. It is also the most widespread deer in the world. There are eight subspecies of white-tail deer in South America as well as thirty in Central and North America. Each year eleven million hunters pursue the white tail. With a population of twenty-five million, it is the most popular game for U.S. hunters.

The impala is a commonly hunted antelope in Africa. There are three African subspecies of this animal which include the East African Impala, Southern Impala and the Black Faced Impala. The impala’s meat is sought after because it’s very tender. However, sometimes they are killed to be used as leopard bait. These antelope can have as many as twenty animals in their herd.

When it comes to small game, squirrels are the most popular in North America. Squirrels are hunted more often than pheasants, doves or quail. They eat a wide variety of vegetarian foods that may include seeds, fruits, nuts, fungi and many other types of green vegetation. Squirrels are intelligent animals that can be skilled at robbing bird feeders.

The meat of the squirrel is a favorite in certain parts of North America. However in more heavier populated areas, it is considered to be a pest because of its habit of nesting in attics.
