The Basics of Hunting

Hunting can be a sport or a necessity. It is defined as the act of pursuing an animal for trade, recreation, or food. The animals that are hunted for these reasons are called game animals. Most of the time these animals are birds and mammals.

There are different methods of hunting game birds or animals. Stalking is the first method. This is where the hunter and the game are out in the open, and it is possible for both to see each other. Pursuing the game with a slow and stealthy approach is considered stalking. The next method is known as still-hunting. Still-hunting is used when the hunter is in a dense forest or thick undergrowth, and cannot see but a couple of feet. When using this method, a hunter moves slow and cautiously in order to “jump” game. Tracking is another method. It is used when stalking and still-hunting cannot be done. Tracking can be done either on soft or hard ground, depending on the hunter's skills. Driving is a method that is done by using dogs to flush game out of almost impenetrable brush. The final two hunting methods are commonly used for game birds or deer. They are known as sitting-up and calling. This is done by sitting in a blind and using a game call to draw the animals near.

An important thing to know about hunting would be the laws that govern the area where you are hunting. If this is overlooked, you may be guilty of poaching. Poaching is when someone illegally hunts or harvests wild game animals. Paying close attention to local hunting and fishing laws should help.
